HILLTOP ARTIST
TACOMA, WA
Hilltop Artists was started in 1994 by Dale Chihuly and Kathy Kaperick. They recognized the need to provide youth with an alternative to being recruited by the groups proliferating violence in the streets of the city. They experienced first hand the unique and transformative aspects of glass art to foster healthy communities and self-confidence. In our 26th year, we currently have 6 programs that serve over 650+ students a year, ranging from 11-21 years old, all tuition-free.
Hilltop Artists students gain arts knowledge through sequential skills building which teaches them valuable 21st-century skills, such as effective communication, integrity/grit, self-expression, and problem-solving. Even during this difficult time, we are being innovative to continue our mission to use glass arts to connect young people from diverse cultural and economic backgrounds to better futures.
Currently all of their programs are shut down, so staff is having to be creative to stay in touch with their students. Recently, they sent out art activity packs and hope to continue providing them throughout the summer but need help funding the project.
